Cloud Based Smart Dual Fuel Switching (“SDFS”) System for Hybrid Residential HVAC Systems

HVAC systems are the largest energy consumers in residential buildings. Regardless of the type of fuel that is being used for space conditioning, the energy demand is increasing in the residential sector. Meanwhile, in northern climates of the US and Canada, a combination of cold climate conditions and poor HVAC control is contributing to higher energy consumption and increases in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A proper HVAC demand management system can play a prominent role in managing the energy network systems and taking a major step towards sustainable housing.  The SDFS system is just such a system.

The SDFS system is an integral part of Noventa’s ongoing efforts at REIMAGINING ENERGYTM services. It is a novel residential HVAC demand management control system developed by a research group at Ryerson University in Toronto which offers excellent potential savings in the HVAC system energy cost and associated GHG emission, while maximizing the effectiveness of existing energy infrastructure. The SDFS system controller, through its innovative algorithm and cloud platform, considers weather conditions and forecasts, building thermal demand and HVAC system capabilities to determine optimal working conditions and then commands how the system must be scheduled. The SDFS system provides an affordable solution for buildings to better manage their energy consumption and associated costs.

Noventa has partnered with Ryerson University to deploy the SDFS system in our renewable energy projects to maximize the benefits of each green technology which is being aggregated in any given renewable energy project that we may design, develop and operate.

The SDFS system has been incorporated in our first residential scale renewable energy project in Philadelphia, PA, which aggregates various green products and technologies to maximize environmental and financial benefits for the homeowner.  The project is discussed in more detail in our research and development section.
